About the Playwright

J.B. Priestley, born John Boynton Priestley on September 13, 1894, in Bradford, Yorkshire, was a prolific English novelist, playwright, screenwriter, and social commentator. His early life was marked by the loss of his mother and his service in World War I, where he was severely wounded. After the war, he attended Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and began his literary career. Priestley gained fame with his novel The Good Companions (1929), and his works often reflected his Yorkshire roots and explored themes of time and social issues. He was also known for his plays, such as An Inspector Calls (1946), which used time distortion to deliver moral messages. Throughout his life, Priestley was a vocal advocate for social justice and left-wing politics, influencing the development of the welfare state in Britain. He passed away on August 14, 1984, leaving behind a legacy of over 120 books and numerous plays.
